Acclaimed music director Prafulla Kar no more

Bhubaneswar: Legendary music director, singer, lyricist, writer and columnist Prafulla Kar passed away at around 10.20 pm on Sunday. He was 83.

A recipient of Padma Shri, the fourth highest civilian award, Kar breathed his last following a heart attack.

Born on February 16, 1939 in Puri, Kar worked as a music director and singer in over 70 Odia films and four Bengali films. He started his training on classical music from his childhood and at the age of 21, he became a recognised singer of All India Radio.

While he started his filmy journey from ‘Patitapabana’, the first major hit came in the form of ‘Mamata’.

The sad news of Kar’s demise shocked the entire music industry and film fraternity. Condolence messages started flooding social media platforms like Facebook and Twitter. Persons including Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik, Union Minister Dharmendra Pradhan, Andhra Pradesh Governor Biswabhushan Harichandan and OPCC president Niranjan Patnaik expressed their condolences.
