Bhubaneswar: Noted film personality Sadhu Meher passed away at his Mumbai residence on Friday. He was 84.
He was an actor, producer, director and writer, all roled into one.
Born on January 1, 1940, he was a native of Gudvelipadar village in Odisha’s Boudh district. An alumni of the Film and Television Institute of India in Pune, Meher made his debut in the Hindi film industry with Mrinal Sen’s Bhuvan Shome in 1969. A year later, the film won national awards for best film, best director and best actor.
He won the national award for best actor for his film ‘Ankur’, directed by Shyam Benegal.
He has also left his footprint in the Odia Film industry. He directed five films like ‘Abhiman’, ‘Aparachita’, ‘Abhilasha’, ‘Gopa Re Badhuchhi Kala Kanhei’, and ‘Babula’.
He will be remembered for his films like ‘Safed Haathi’, ‘Gharaonda’, ‘Inkar’, ‘Mrigaya’, among others.
While he was awarded the Padma Shri in 2017, the Odisha government awarded him with Jayadev Samman in 2011.
