Mesmerising evening awaits: Rabindranath Tagore’s ‘Chandalika’ to be presented in Odissi style at Rabindra Mandap on Aug 13

Bhubaneswar: City art lovers are in for a cultural treat on the evening of August 13 as for the first time Kabi Guru Rabindranath Tagore’s iconic dance drama ‘Chandalika’ will be presented in Odia language and Odissi style.

This dance drama will be presented by the dancers led by eminent Odissi dancer Guru Shrabani Mitra, the founder of Angika Dance Academy, a Cuttack-based Odissi dance institution.

This presentation will be a part of Angika Dance Academy’s Gurupoojan Utsav 2025 to be held at Rabindra Mandap on August 13 from 6.30 PM onwards.

Before the curtains rise on the main performance, there will be a felicitation ceremony, suggesting the academy’s commitment to recognizing the torchbearers of the tradition.

While Guru Niranjan Rout will be felicitated with Guru Shrestha Samman, Guru Ashimbandhu Bhattacharjee, Guru Smt Mamata Ojha and Guru Swapneswar Chakraborty will be honoured with Guru Shree Samman.

Next, art connoisseurs will find being coaxed to be a part of a journey of an excellent blend of Odissi’s lyrical vocabulary with Tagore’s poignant narrative. Translated into many languages, ‘Chandalika’ is popular around the globe and enacted in various dance forms.

For the first time, it is going to be presented in Odia and Odissi. Choreographed by Guru Shrabani Mitra, the production delves into the journey of a marginalized girl who rises from the shadows of self-ignorance to self-realisation and promises an experience that will bound to leave the audience captivated.

Adding another feather to the vibrant evening’s cap, there will be a Katahk recital by Guru Ashimbandhu Bhattacharjee and troupe from Kolkata.

The event is free and open to all, ensuring that art lovers and common audience can partake in this celebration.
