From global glory to local screens: Odia film ‘Charikandha’ to release on February 27

Bhubaneswar: The much-talked-about Odia film ‘Charikandha’ is set to hit the big screen on February 27.

Produced under the banner of Ritupriya Production, the 36-minute cinematic gem’s release date was announced at a press conference in at the Bhubaneswar Press Club on Tuesday.

Producer Atish Kumar Rout, director Bishwanath Rath, creative publicity designer Shyama Prasad Mishra, and actors Shakti Baral, Shatabdi Suryasnatha, Sushil Mishra, Gaurav Mohanty, Shibani Khara, Prabhanjan Mishra, Riddhi Parida, Suruchika Mahapatra, Namita Sahu, Nityananda Rout, Raj S. Padhi, Soumya Ranjan Nayak, Sanskruti Swain, S. Rajendra and Soumya R. Shadangi were present at the event.

Editor Bir Kumar Nanda, music director and playback singer Amit Yuvraj, sync sound engineer Dileswar Panda and media planner Pranaya Jethi also attended.

Though just 36 minutes long, the film has packed quite a punch on the global festival circuit. It has travelled to over 46 national and international film festivals and has won over 22 awards. Notably, ‘Charikandha’ was screened in the mid-length film category at the prestigious Hokkaido International Film Festival in Japan — a moment of pride for Odia cinema. Out of only eight films selected worldwide in the category, ‘Charikandha’ was the sole Indian entry and went on to win accolades.

Delving into the stark realities of contemporary society, ‘Charikandha’ explores contemporary social realities and the loneliness associated with old age, presenting a deeply emotional and thought-provoking narrative.

The story, screenplay and direction have been handled by Bishwanath Rath, while Atish Kumar Rout has produced the film. Supriya Rout and Akhil Rajurkar have served as co-producers.

Addressing the media, the team expressed unwavering confidence that audiences will walk out of theatres on February 27 with moist eyes rather than thunderous applause — deeply moved by the film’s emotional depth and powerful storytelling.
