‘Anand Utsav’ kicks off in New Delhi

New Delhi: JAYANTIKA-Mayadhar Raut School of Odissi Dance organised three-day ‘Anand Utsav’ kick started at Triveni Kala Sangam here on March 23.

The festival celebrates 90th birthday of living legend Guru Mayadhar Raut. After the customary lighting the auspicious lamp by Special Resident Commissioner, Government of Odisha, the festival proceeded towards the cultural evening.

A widely acclaimed singer and music composer Elangovan Govindarajan began the evening with soulful rendition of popular ‘Poorvi Tilana’. M V Chandrasekhar and Raghuraman Govindarajan lent support to him on the Mrindangam and flute respectively.

The following presentation was a scintillating Sarangi recital by Ustad Kamal Sabri. He played raga Jod, transporting the connoisseurs to a state of sublime. He was ably supported by his disciple Adnan. Shri Jagannath and Rameez Raza accompanied them on the Tabla.

The concluding item of the evening was a Dhrupad recital by Padma Shri awardee Ustad Wasifuddin Dagar. He held the packed audience in thrall from beginning to end. Spontaneous applause stood testimony to his powerful and penetrating voice and unwavering grasp of the fundamentals. He had the good support of talented Shri Mohan Shyam Sharma on the Pakhawaj.
