Bhubaneswar: The fourth evening of ongoing 22nd Bharat Rang Mahotsav (Azadi Segment), presented by National School of Drama at KIIT auditorium in Bhubaneswar, witnessed an engaging Assamese play ‘Phulaguri Dhewa’.
The play was staged by Abinaswar Goshti, one of the premier theatre organisations in Assam.
The play tells the story of farmers’ revolt against the British at Phulaguri in the middle Assam in October 1861 AD, which is called as Assam’s first peasant uprising.
The British administration declared opium cultivation illegal and increased the land debt by more than 30 percent, triggering discontent among farmers.
This also gave rise to an uprising against the British.
During the revolt, while about 39 peasants lost their lives, the heroes of Phulaguri- Lakhan Singh, Rongdor and Changbor- were hanged by the British administration to quell the revolt.
While Utpal Kalita and Mintu Kalita were excellent in delivering justice to their respective characters, all the other artistes too tried their level best to infuse life into their characters.
The director’s efforts and the rehearsal prior to staging were reflected on the stage.
The audience in the auditorium didn’t get time to doze off in their seats.
Sarada Kanta Bordoloi is the playwright of the play while Dipok Borah is the director.
