Dhauli-Kalinga Mahotsav 2nd evening: Buddha Samman conferred on Odissi, Hindustani vocalist Guru Pt Gopal Chandra Panda

Dhauli: The second evening of 17th Dhauli-Kalinga Mahotsav at the foothill of Dhauli Shanti Stupa Sunday witnessed presentation of Buddha Samman and Guru Gangadhar Pradhan Smruti Samman. The evening also offered a beautiful blend of classical and martial dance performances to cream de la crème of dance lovers.

While eminent Odissi and Hindustani vocalist Guru Pt Gopal Chandra Panda was conferred with Buddha Samman, renowned veena player Guru K. Ramarao Patra, eminent Odissi danseuse Dr. Snehaprava Samantra, noted journalist and dance critic Shyamahari Chakra and renowned sound designer and music arranger Late Tarakanta Panda were conferred with Guru Gangadhar Pradhan Smruti Samman.

First presentation of the 2nd evening was Odissi dance by the dancers of Art Vision lead by Guru Dr. Ileana Citaristi. Their first item was Pallavi in Raga Kolavati and Tala Tripata, music composition by Shri Ghanashyam Panda, rhythm composition by Guru Banamali Maharana and choreographed by Guru Ileana Citaristi. Next, they presented Meghadootam of poet Kalidas, music composed by Guru Laxmikanta Palit and choreographed by Guru Ileana Citaristi.

The following presentation was Bharatnatyam by artistes of Bharatanjali from Chennai lead by Guru Anitha Guha. With the invocatory item Margazhi Thingal – Paasuram they started their presentation, followed by Jathiswara Sahithyam, where in an episode from the Ramyanam is depicted in the Jathiswaram format. Their next item was Gopi Gopala Bala a beautiful composition by the saint poet Surdas followed by Nottru Suvargam – Paasuram and Pancha Shivan present the five different forms of Lord Shiva. Their last item was Tarana set to ragam Darbari Kanda followed by Abhang-Bhimaha maruti in ragam Jaunpuri. All the items are concept, choreographed and nattuvangam by Guru Kalaimamani Smt. Anitha Guha.

The concluding presentation of the evening was Purlia Chhau Dance by Kalipada Chhau Nritya Samiti from Purulia, West Bengal lead by Guru Susanta Mahato. They presented Mahisasura Vadh. This form of dance is a mean of portraying stories to the audience, with the artistes wearing elaborated masks and headgear associated with battle and war during the performance.

The dignitaries who graced the occasion were Science & Technology, Public Enterprises, Social Security & Empowerment Minister Ashok Chandra Panda, Principal Secretary, Tourism, Vishal Kumar Dev; Chairperson, OTDC Ltd, Smt. Shreemaye Mishra; Secretary, Orissa Dance Academy, Guru Aruna Mohanty and secretary, Art Vision, Guru Ileana Citaristi.
