New Delhi: The workshop on Odissi dance, organised by Emanch in association with Jayantika, a dance institution founded by none other than Padma Shri awardee Guru Mayadhar Raut, on August 8 was educative and informative as well.

The journey of Odissi dance from its root in Mahari tradition to the present form was discussed in the workshop.

It was unique in nature as it catered to Odissi dancers of all levels. Shri C M M Upadhaya, founder of eManch, moderated the workshop with a very informative narrative.

What added value to the workshop was the participation of Padma Shri awardee Guru Mayadhar Raut. He talked about his eight decades of Odissi experience and shared his insights. He is one of the main Gurus who redefined Odissi and gave it a classical status. It was an overwhelming moment to hear him speak on the Mahari tradition and JAYANTIKA organization that was formed in late 1950s to codify Odissi dance.

Guru Madhumita Raut touched upon the historical and technical background of Odissi Dance and taught a short Pallavi in Bairag Raga. Similarly, young and talented Odissi dancer Lucky Mohanty taught Arasa,Belis and Paramparika Hasta Mudras in the workshop.

Over 140 dancers and students from across the world participated in the workshop. They will be awarded certificates, it was learnt.
