California: Jyoti Kala Mandir has started an Odissi dance series ‘Sphuranam’. It will be streamed online on last Saturdays of every month, informed Guru Jyoti Rout, founder/director of Jyoti Kala Mandir.
The series’ first episode featured Monika Samantray and Disha Deba Dipta, two young but talented disciples of Guru Jyoti Rout.
Rout’s choice for these two svelte dancers to begin the series was appropriate. Besides excellent chemistry between them, their body movements, foot works are seen to be believed.
They presented ‘Ananda Bhairavi Pallavi’. Pallavis are pure dance items focusing less on expressions as found in case of Abhinaya. Pallavis get their names after the ragas they based.
Monika and Disha’s Pallavi is based on raga Ananda Bhairavi, tala Ektali, choreographed by Guru Rout, music composed by Guru Dhiraj Kumar Mohapatra and rhythm composed by Guru Sachidanand Das. The presention was mesmerizing. Use of Gotipua style of walks and movements in the choreography made the presentation all the more entertaining.
Both Monika and Disha are senior disciples of Guru Jyoti Rout and have participated in many prestigious festivals.
In the second part, Dr Sumedha Khana, a medical doctor and a social activist, in a brief interview, shared some inspiring experiences of her life.
