Odisha celebrates 90th Sita Bibaha Diwas, calls for boost to film industry

Bhubaneswar: The Odisha Cine Critics’ Association (OCCA), in collaboration with the Odia Language, Literature, and Culture Department, celebrated the 90th Sita Bibaha Diwas, marking the release of the first Odia film, “Sita Bibaha,” directed by Mohan Sundar Deb Goswami in 1936.

The event, held at the Buddha Mandir Auditorium, saw industry professionals and cinephiles gather to pay homage to the pioneers of Odia cinema. Speakers emphasized the need for producers and directors to focus on creating films based on original stories, which would resonate with audiences and stand the test of time.

Among others, association president and senior journalist Pradosh Pattanayak, secretary Dilip Hali, senior producer Pranab Das, Arun Mohanty, producer Atis Rout, dialogue writer Dr Rajani Ranjan Das, Shakti Baral and producer Srikant Das were present.

Key Demands Raised

– Increase the number of cinema halls to 300 across 30 districts.

– Provide subsidies to producers to encourage quality filmmaking.

The association urged the government to support the Odia film industry by providing incentives for producers and promoting local talent.

The event was marked with a floral tribute to Mohan Sundar Deb Goswami at Utkal Mandap, followed by a discussion on the future of Odia cinema.

A violin concert by Rakesh Biswal added a musical touch to the evening.

Parallel celebrations were also held at the Press Club, where industry professionals, including producers, directors, actors, and technicians, came together to commemorate the important day.

Actor Sukant Rath, who had been instrumental in organizing the event, appealed to the government to declare April 28 as Odia Film Day.
