Veteran Bollywood actor Nana Patekar passes away at 75 in Goa

Bhubaneswar: Veteran Bollywood actor Nana Patekar passed away today morning. He was 74. The shocking news sent shockwaves through the film industry and leaving his fans across the nation mourning.

Sources said, the actor was found unconscious at his home in Goa, following which he was rushed to a private hospital where the doctors tried to revive the actor, but to no avail. He was declared dead at 5.20 am. Cardiac arrest is said to be the cause of his death.

Taking to X, Prime Minister Narendra Modi wrote, “Few actors possessed the intensity, individuality and unmistakable presence that Shri Nana Patekar Ji had. He brought remarkable versatility and creativity to every role and gave us characters that will be remembered for generations. He was also admired for his frank and forthright views, never hesitating to express what he believed in.”

“Shri Nana Patekar’s contribution to Hindi and Marathi cinema was immense. His passing leaves a deep void. My condolences to his family, friends and countless admirers. Om Shanti,” read the post.

Odisha Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi on an X post wrote, “The demise of veteran actor Nana Patekar Ji is a great loss to Indian cinema. Through his exceptional talent, powerful performances and enduring contribution to the arts, he left an indelible mark on generations of audiences.”

“May Mahaprabhu Shri Jagannath grant eternal peace to the departed soul and provide strength and solace to his family, friends and countless admirers in this hour of grief. Om Shanti,” he added.

Born on January 1, 1951, he began his artistic journey as a theatre artiste in Marathi plays before joining Sir J.J. Institute of Applied Art in Mumbai.

He made his Bollywood debut in “Gaman” in the year 1978. However, his role in Mira Nair’s ‘Salaam Bombay’ in 1988 earned him recognition. His role in “Parinda” proved to be a major turning point in his career, earning him both the National Film Award for Best Supporting Actor and the Filmfare Award for Best Supporting Actor.

A recipient of three National Film Awards, Patekar carved a niche for himself with his intense performances and remarkable versatility. He will be remembered for his films “Amkish”(1985), “Andha Yudh”(1987), “Pratighaat”(1987), “Parinda”(1988), “Prahaar”(1991), ‘’Angaar”(1992), “Raju Ban Gaya Gentlemman(1992), “Tirangaa”(1993), “Krantiveer”(1994), “Prahaar”(1994), “AgniSakshi”(1995), “Khamoshi:The Musical”(1996), “Ghulam-E-Mustafa” and ‘Yeshwant”(1997), “’Aab Tak Chhapan”(2004), “Apaharan”(2005), “Welcome”(2007), “Raajneeti”(2010), “Natsamrat”(2016), “Golmaal Again” (2017), “Houseful 5”(2025), and many others. He was last seen in “O’Romeo”.

He was honoured with the Padma Shri in 2013, recognising his immense contribution to cinema and the arts.

The actor is survived by his wife, Neelkanti and son, Malhar Patekar.
