Veteran Odia actor Uttam Mohanty no more

Bhubaneswar: Veteran Ollywood actor Uttam Mohanty passed away on Thursday while undergoing treatment at a private hospital in New Delhi.

The tragic news was confirmed by his son actor Babushaan.

He was 66.

Worth mentioning, the actor fell ill while shooting of a film three weeks ago. He was rushed to a private hospital in Bhubaneswar.

He had been suffering from liver related complications.

As his condition did not improve, he was airlifted to New Delhi on February 8, from where he was shifted to Medanta Hospital in Gurgaon in Delhi NCR.

However, he breathed his last on Thursday, leaving behind an indelible mark in the Odia film industry.

As the news of his passing away spread, starting from political leaders, actors, actresses, his fans and well wishers mourned with condolence messages flooding social media platforms.

He is survived by his wife Aparajita Mohanty and Babushaan, who are also active in Odia film industry.

Born on December 23, 1958, in Baripada, Mayurbhanj district, Uttam made his acting debut in 1977 in Abhiman. He continued to entertain cine lovers for the last four decades.He acted in over 135 Odia films, 30 Bengali movies and one Hindi movie titled ‘Naya Jahar’.

The films remembered forever for his stellar performance are ‘Sankha Mahuri’, ‘Sarapancha Babu’, ‘Danda Balunga’, ‘Nijhum Ratira Sathi’, ‘Akshay Trutiya’, ‘Arati’, ‘Astaraga’, ‘Dekh Khabar Rakh Najar’, Jhiati Sita Pari’, ‘Janani’, ‘Chaka Bhaunri’, ‘Jaga Hatare Pagha’, ‘Samaya Bada Balaban’, ‘School Master’, ‘Ei Ama Sansara’, ‘Chaka Akhi Sabu Dekhuchhi’, ‘Phula Chandan’, ‘Jahaku Rakhibe Ananta’, ‘Pua Mora Kala Thakura’, Chaka Dola Karuchhi Leela’, ‘Rajanigandha’, and ‘Saharibagha’.

After his mortal remains were flown back from New Delhi to Bhubaneswar, they were taken to his residence where people from different walks of life gathered to pay their last tribute. Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi too visited to his residence to pay his last tribute.

Later, in a grand procession, the actor’s mortal remains were taken to Satyanagar crematorium with people standing on both sides of the entire stretch to bid adieu to their favourite actor.

With full state honours, the actor’s mortal remains were consigned to flames. His son Babushaan lit the funeral pyre.
