Veteran Odia film actor Ajit Das passes away at 71

Bhubaneswar: Eminent Odia cine actor is no more. He breathed his last while undergoing treatment for COVID-19 at a private hospital here. He was 71.

He is survived by wife Maya Das and three daughters.
He and his wife had tested positive for coronavirus and were admitted to the private hospital September 1. While his wife had recovered, he had been fighting against the deadly virus.

An NSDian, Das was born on January 20, 1949 in Karanjia, Mayurbhanj.
He started his film career with ‘Sindua Bindu’. He acted in 60 or so films. He will remain alive in the hearts of Odia cine lovers for his films like ‘Punarmilan’, ‘Abhiman’, ‘Sankha Mahuri’, ‘Balidaan’, ‘Tapasya’ and ‘Hakim Babu’.

He had been active in staging plays as well. He founded a theatre group ‘AJIT’ and had been holding annual theatre festival.
He also worked as head of the department of drama at Utkal Sangeet Mahavidyalay.

Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik termed Das’s death as a great void in the Odia film industry. He conveyed his deep sympathy to the bereaved family.

His compatriot Uttam Mohanty said after Bijay Mohanty, he has lost his another elder brother.
