World’s longest theatre festival to begin from Jan 13 in Rajasthan, Odia play ‘Lal Paen’ selected

Alwar: The 75-day-long second edition of Alwar Rangam Theatre Festival, organised by Rang Sanskar Theatre Group, is all set to begin at HMT Auditorium, Mehedi Bag, Gayetri Mandir Road in Alwar, Rajasthan from January 13 and continue till March 28.

According to Dr Deshraj Meena, director of Rang Sanskar Theatre Group, Alwar Theatre Festival is going to be the longest theatre festival in the world.

This year, the festival will witness 75 best plays in six different languages including Hindi, Odia, Bengali, Marathi, Sanskrit and Urdu.

While 63 Hindi plays will be staged during the festival, there will be seven Bengali, two Marathi and one each of Odia, Sanskrit and Urdu plays will be staged.

Last year, it was a 27-day-long festival.

The Odia play selected for the festival is ‘Lal Paen’ by Mirror Theatre, a Jharsuguda based theatre group. It is written and directed by Subhash Pradhan.

The play narrates the plight of people who were displaced by the Hirakud dam project on the river Mahanadi. ‘Lal Paen’ literally means red water as it depicts how the displaced people shed the tear of blood.
