Bhubaneswar: The 62nd episode of Anuvartanam-In tune with the times, which went online January 18, featured young and dynamic Odissi dancer Biswajit Das.

Biswajit, a senior repertoire member of Orissa Dance Academy, started off with a Mangalacharan ‘Bujhe sarbe benu…’. In this extract from ‘Jagannathashtakam’, the dancer drew parallel between Lord Jagannath worshipped in Puri and Lord Krishna of Vrindavan. The dancer was excellent in delineating various episodes associated with Lord Jagannath and Lord Krishna. It was his facial expressions and body movements that made delineation simpler. The item was choreographed by Guru Aruna Mohanty, music composed by Guru Bijay Kumar Jena and rhythm composed by Guru Dhaneswar Swain and Guru Bijay Kumar Barik.

Next he presented ‘Hamshadhwai Pallavi’, based on tala Ektali. The item was choreographed by Guru Kelucharan Mohapatra and music composed by Pt. Bhubaneswar Mishra.
He concluded his presentation with an abhinaya ‘priye charu sile…’ from Geeta Govinda.

Here the dancer narrates the episode wherein frustrated Radha sends away Krishna for coming to her early in the morning after spending the night with another woman. Krishna again comes to her later in the day and tries to pacify her but failed. It is then he falls at her feet. Moved by his genuine apology, she forgives him.
Here again Biswajit proved his mettle. Biswajit’s ability to transform from one sequence to another needs special mention.

Since it was virtual, this reviewer couldn’t see how the connoisseurs received the presentation. But it ticked all the boxes. No doubt.

Anuvartanam, a series of online Odissi presentations started during COVID-19 time by Srjan, features solo performances.
