Nadia: The 21st edition of Suchana Natyo Utsav, organised by ‘Suchana’, one of the premier theatre groups in the state, is all set to begin from January 31 on the premises of Bagula Girls’ High School at Bagula under Nadia district of West Bengal.
Like every year, this year too the two-day-long festival will live up to the expectation of theatre lovers in entertaining them.
On the inaugural day, at around 4pm, a padyatra will be taken out from the venue which will pass through the main road of the town. After covering 1 kilometre, it will return to the starting point. Then the festival will be inaugurated.
As per the tradition of the festival, the directors of the two invited theatre groups will inaugurate the festival this year. They are Arup Roy and Sudipta Dutta.
After the completion of the lighting the auspicious lamp ceremony, the inaugural item will be a mime show by Asit Acharjee of Ang Kalpana, Kanshrapara, North 24 Pragana. The next item will be a street play titled ‘Chhera Chappal O Bhater Galpa’ by the artistes of Gayeshpur Sanglap of Nadia district. It’s director is Sudipta Dutta who is also acting in the play.
The evening will come to an end with a play titled ‘Bhalo Basa’ by Anek theatre group from Kolkata. The play is directed by Arup Roy.
On the concluding day, there will be two plays for the theatre lovers.
While the first play will be ‘Subharambha’ by Asansol Domohani Natya Sena, the second play will be ‘Harano Prapti’ by the host theatre group Suchana Natyo Dal. The plays are directed by Manoranjan Som and Srijan Mondal respectively.
Despite various hardships, Suchana Natyo Dal has been organising the festival since last 20 years, earning a name among the theatre lovers.
With no auditorium in the area, it organises it’s festival on open space, putting up tents. And to give the theatre lovers a better viewing experience, it hires sound system from other places.
It is worth mentioning that the festival is a ticketed one and all the tickets have been sold out, a testimony to the popularity of the festival.
